Party Into the Twilight

Posted on December 28, 2009 | 0 Comments

There’s always a little lag time when I'm asked if I’ve read the series Twilight. I think it’s that checking for even ground. There's question, then the tiptoe around it, “Oh I may have read it . . .” waiting for a reaction to see if they’ve read it, too. I mean, it is pretty much a teenybopper book, right? Then why can’t I help but be completely obsessed?! As soon as I find out that someone else loves it, we end up talking for hours about the books we’ve read three times already.

Well, here’s what I say. I say we embrace our teen-vampire-loving selves, admit that the Edward from the movie is slightly sexy, even if he was in a Harry Potter flick, and throw one heck of a Twilight movie night party. The theme? Everything red, of course! Red velvet cake, red cupcakes, strawberry ice cream — and lucky enough, Arbor Mist fits right in!  Check out Mixed Berry Pinot Noir for a darker shade of red. Then settle in, get giddy, and giggle and swoon over the movie you’ve already watched 32 times.

Tell me, are you Team Edward or Team Jacob?

FUNdraiser Party

Posted on December 21, 2009 | 0 Comments

Have you ever had that glow? That sparkle inside yourself that ignites a smile you can’t wipe off your face, even with the strongest makeup remover? It’s that feeling you get when you’ve done something for someone else. Or perhaps you’ve just done something for a good cause. Well, let’s take a minute and do some social chemistry here. What if we took one part social butterfly (like you all know we are) and one part charitable goddess (goddess? Finally some recognition!), and combined the two to create something that puts a smile not only on your face, but on others’ as well.

A close girlfriend of mine was telling me the other day that they had Good Cause parties in college. They would choose a charity and throw a party to raise money for it. If you’re more hands-on, try throwing a soiree to benefit a children's hospital. Make tiny art kits for the kids while having fun. Then hand-deliver your gifts to the hospital and get to see the wide eyes and smiles as the children receive a little sparkle in their day! Now, who puts FUN in fundraiser?!

Check out some of our favorite charities or visit Just Give to search for some amazing causes on your own.

Not-So-Boring Board Game Night

Posted on December 15, 2009 | 0 Comments

I’ve recently been lucky enough to relive a few experiences from my past that I was pleasantly surprised with. The first was making popsicles. You know, the last time I poured some juice in an ice tray and froze it to a stick, I think I may have been 7 or 8. I tell you, there was a reason we did this before, and the reason was that it is dang delicious! The second is roller-skating. Don’t ask me why, but a few of us found ourselves with nothing to do on a Friday night, so we all trekked to the local roller rink. This was a ridiculously fun time, but I don’t know how I ever was able to stand up on skates in the first place. I was horrible at it, either because I’ve always been horrible at it, or because I couldn’t stop laughing long enough to concentrate.

The last thing, and the reason for this post, is playing board games! Here’s the idea: throw a  board game party night, and I guarantee you will not be bored one bit! Ransack your local toy stores, and pick up a few classics like Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit (much harder than I remember), and then a few new classics like Apples to Apples or Cranium. Set out some light snacks, and mix the evening with some Arbor Mist. Island Fruit Pinot Grigio and Orchard Fruits Chardonnay work perfectly. In the end, I think you’ve got yourself a new trend you and your friends will be trading off hosting for a long time!

Do you like playing board games?

At-Home Brunch Ideas

Not all of us were meant to wear aprons in the kitchen — although it would be nice to have that one dish in the bag you can pull out at any moment to impress your friends or perhaps a new guy. But maybe you’re so accident-prone in the kitchen, you can’t even cook up a stale glass of water.

That’s when it’s time to bring in the cavalry. Your girls were meant for many things: shoulders to cry on, telling you when it’s time throw out that dress you’ve had since high school, and even cooking lessons! If you take a look online, you’ll find quite a few small businesses that specialize in one-time cooking classes for groups of friends. Or if you’d like the extended courses, most junior colleges offer 6-week classes on how turn your ordinary dish into, voila, a sparkling masterpiece! And don’t forget to include your closest friends, because no one likes to cook alone! (Psssst . . . a small secret is that most of these places will let you bring in your own drinks, but make sure to ask first. Just remember that you can’t go wrong with any of the Arbor Mist flavors!)

If you’d just like to invite a few friends over and experiment on your own, here are some great links to a few delicious recipes:

Totally Rad '80s!

Posted on December 08, 2009 | 0 Comments

No one can deny that the movies of the '80s have found a place in all of our hearts. They’re why 16 was such a beautiful birthday, and no matter how old we get, we’ll always look prettiest in pink. It’s those '80s classics like The Breakfast Club, Karate Kid, and Sixteen Candles that left us eternally waiting for our Jake Ryan to come whisk us away from boring monotony to tabletops where candlelit birthday cakes live on forever.

So, in honor of all these great old movies, we’ve decided to create a holiday for every vibrant color they brought into our lives. Break out the leg warmers and rock your ponytail to one side, because it’s time for Radical '80s Movie Day. Gather your best friends together dressed in their most bodacious attire, and throw a few printouts of some old '80s hunks up on the wall. Early Tom Cruise and a little Ralph Macchio will do just fine. Everyone can bring over a dish or a drink themed for Pretty in Pink (Arbor Mist Strawberry White Zinfandel?). Then pop in your favorite '80s tunes and movies, and swoon over the nostalgia!

Here is some '80s movie trivia to get the party started. Can you match the quote with the movie?

Long-Distance Reminiscence

It’s Friday night and you’re away from all of your closest friends. Maybe you took a great job in another city and had to leave everyone behind. Maybe you have a brand-new puppy that can’t stay home alone because she always seems to turn the apartment into one giant chew toy. Or maybe you’re home with the kids. Whatever your reason, the point is, you think that you’re doomed to boredom. Um . . . HELLO?! Technology to the rescue! We say Skype it! There’s a way to get together with all your greatest girlfriends without breaking the bank. Take Poochie to the store with you and pick up your favorite bevy. Rain, Rain, Don’t Go Away

Posted on November 25, 2009 | 0 Comments

Who wouldn’t rather be sitting under a beautiful summer sunray than a dreary dark raincloud on a fall afternoon? Sometimes we just have no choice but to succumb to the season. We say, why not make the best of that rainy day by remembering a few things we may have forgotten while the sun was in our eyes? Every season has its glamour; we’ve just got to find it.

For me, when the rain is already here and it seems like I’m trapped indoors, I like to choose my company wisely. I invite a few friends over for a gray-day movie marathon. Old black-and-white films go perfectly with that cloudy weather. A little Gene Kelly, anyone? Singing in the Rain was made specifically for sitting indoors while the sky falls outside, or at least that’s what I think. For beverages, take Arbor Mist Sparkling Wine in Raspberry or Peach Sparkle, mix with ice and some fresh peaches or berries, put it all in a blender, and voila! A little sunshine added to your rainy day!

Here are some of my favorite rainy-day movie marathon classics.
